The HomeRemote Pro Gateway connects your Z-Wave home accessories to the Internet for easy control via a cellular phone or the HomeRemote Pro web portal.
2 – User’s Guide Overview
This Users Guide will go over the following:
3 – What is Z-Wave™ Technology?
Z-Wave is an award-winning home control wireless standard. Using fail-safe wireless mesh technology, Z-Wave provides reliable and secure connections for all Z-Wave devices within the home. The HomeRemote Pro System uses Z-Wave technology to communicate with home control devices and modules. To ensure that the Home Control devices you purchase are compatible with the HomeRemote Pro System, make sure to look for the Z-Wave logo on the module plastic or packaging.
Z-Wave is a next-generation wireless "ecosystem" that lets all your home electronics talk to each other, and to you, via remote control and the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. It uses simple, reliable, low-power radio waves that easily travel through walls, floors and cabinets. Z-Wave functionality can be added to almost any electronic device in your house, even devices that you wouldn't ordinarily think of as "intelligent," such as appliances, window shades, thermostats and home lighting.
Z-Wave unifies all your home electronics into an integrated wireless network, with no complicated programming and no new cables to run. Any Z-Wave enabled device can be effortlessly added to this network, and many non-Z-Wave devices can be made compatible by simply plugging them into a Z-Wave accessory module. In seconds, your device gets joined to the network and can communicate wirelessly with other Z-Wave modules and controllers. Because Z-Wave operates on its own unique frequency, it will not interfere with other wireless equipment in your home, like cordless telephones and Wi-Fi routers. And because Z-Wave is a modular system, you can build your network one device at a time, one room at a time, or the whole house at once. The choice is yours, and the possibilities are nearly endless. Best of all, Z-Wave technology is extremely affordable, giving you powerful home control that you can integrate yourself in moments, at a fraction of the cost of conventional smart home technologies.

7.11 – Adding / Detecting Modules (Node Inclusion)
Follow the steps below to successfully add/include modules and sensors to your HomeRemote Pro system. When adding modules be sure to add your Door Sensors and Motion Detectors as the last devices added. This is necessary for the Gateway to manage communications properly to these devices. Lamp, appliance and other non battery powered modules should be added first. Each module will have some sort of "Program" button. The program button on the module is used to initiate communication with the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. To add modules follow these simple steps:
a) Power on your module by plugging it into a wall outlet (lamp modules, appliance modules, etc.) or placing batteries into them (door sensors and motion detectors)
b) Make sure the modules are placed within five (5) feet of the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. Some modules support long range inclusions, however not all do. If your module supports long range detection/inclusion then the Gateway can detect your module further than five feet away
c) Click the Detect Module button once your module has been powered and placed within five feet of the Gateway. The wizard will begin the detection process by displaying a progress wheel with a status update.
d) Quickly, press the "Program" on your module or sensor (normally located on the bottom of sensors and on the side/top of lamp and appliance modules). The wizard should detect your module at this point and present the module detail input page. If the module is not detected, press the "Program" button again (Repeat the step if the Gateway does not detect your module. If the Gateway's module detection times out, click Detect Modules to activate it again, then quickly repeat the process by pressing the "Program" button on your module).
e) Once the module has been detected you will be asked to enter information regarding your specific module. Give your new module a specific name (i.e. Front Door Lights), select a room (i.e. Front Door) and then select a graphical icon to represent your module. Click Add when you have completed this step.
f) Repeat these steps until you have added all your modules and sensors to the HomeRemote Pro system.
g) Click Next to continue.

To configure your network using a Z-Wave remote control, click on Advanced Options (Controller Configurations). Configuring with Z-Wave enabled remote controls may require advanced knowledge of Z-Wave networks. For more information please view Section "8 – Using other HomeRemote Pro Compatible Z-Wave Remote Controls."
7.12 – Check Connections (Network Rediscovery)
After your modules have been added to the system you will need to place them into the rooms you have created. Take your modules and sensors and install them in your desired rooms. Make sure that the modules are placed within 100 feet of another module (sensors do not count here) or the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. Sensors cannot "repeat" a wireless signal thus do not count as a module. Modules and sensors must all be placed within 100 feet of a Module only.

When you have installed your modules and sensors, click "Check Connections" to run a system analysis on your wireless connections. This analysis may take several minutes depending on how many modules and sensors are in your home. Please be patient as this process completes.
Under the Status section, red and green icons will appear accordingly to the module. A green icon represent a successful connection between the Gateway and/or specific module. A red icon represent an error or unsucccesfully connection between the Gateway and/or specific module. In order to complete the setup, ALL modules and sensors must display a green icon. To fix the connection errors there are several trouble shooting solutions:
Click "Check Connections" again to see if your fixes worked. If the Check Connection still fails you may have a faulty module and need to replace it. To delete a module from your system, simply click the Red Icon for your specific module and click OK to force remove the module. Once you have all Green icons, click Next to continue.

7.13 – Pro-Level™ Service and Completion
Congratulations on successfully setting up the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. If your purchase comes with a promo code for free Pro-Level service, enter the code at this time. You can enter your payment information by clicking the green button. Entering your payment information allows HomeRemote Pro to charge your credit card automatically to avoid any interruption in service when your free trial service expires. If you choose to not enter your payment information at this time you can simply click the blue button to continue with no obligations.
You will now be taken to the Home Status and home view page where you can begin accessing your system.

8 – Using HomeRemote Pro compatible Z-Wave Remote Controls with your System
There are many Z-Wave capable / HomeRemote Pro Compatible remote controls on the market. Most Z-Wave capable remote controls are compatible with the HomeRemote Pro System. There are cases where a remote control may be beneficial in assisting you through your HomeRemote Pro setup, such as installing light switches or thermostats that may be too far from the location of your HomeRemote Pro Gateway. Remote controls, such as the Advanced Remote from GE and others from Leviton and Cooper will all work with your HomeRemote Pro System. You will need to carefully read the user’s manual that came with your 3rd party remote control and find the section that guides you through setting up a secondary controller or replicating your controller.
Z-Wave technology allows for multiple controllers to be used within the same network. These controllers can function as a primary controller and/or an inclusion controller, with the ability to add, remove and edit sensors and modules. Controllers can also function as a secondary controller and have the limited functionality of being able to turn modules on or off. The HomeRemote Pro System normally functions as a primary controller in a standard Z-Wave network. However, in the case where there is already a primary controller (such as a preconfigured Z-Wave home remote control) the HomeRemote Pro Gateway can accept the settings from your primary controller and act as a secondary controller. Lastly the HomeRemote Pro Gateway can transfer its Primary control setting to a remote control, which can in turn add modules and devices into the network. When all desired modules have been added using the remote control, the Primary control setting can be transferred back to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway.
To add the settings from your 3rd party remote control to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway you will need to find the ‘Replicating’ feature on your remote. During the Setup Wizard step that modules are added or removed there is a link underneath “Detect Modules” called "Advanced Options" that allows you to do the following:

a) Transfer Settings TO a controller:
Replicate settings from your HomeRemote Pro Gateway to a 3rd party remote control (as a secondary controller, this feature DOES NOT shift the Primary control to the remote control).
Transfer your current network settings from your Gateway to another remote control (to be used as a secondary controller). The remote control will not be able to add or remove devices from your system. If new devices are added to your system through the Gateway, the remote control will need to be updated with the latest information each time a new module or sensor is added. To access this, on the Adding Modules page click on Advanced Options then click on "Transfer settings TO a controller," then initiate the receive settings mode on your secondary remote control.
b) Receive Settings FROM a controller:
Replicate settings from a 3rd party remote control to your HomeRemote Pro Gateway. This will set your HomeRemote Pro Gateway as a secondary controller and thus will not have the ability to add and remove modules via the HomeRemote Pro interface. This mode will can also shift the Primary control setting from a Primary remote control to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway.
Replicating Remote Control Settings to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway:
If your home current has a Z-Wave based home control system from a 3rd party vendor, you can possibly transfer your current settings onto the HomeRemote Pro System. First you will need to figure out where your Primary controller is (usually the remote control used initially to configure your Z-Wave system (i.e. your Intermatic Master Remote). Next you'll need to figure out how to initiate the "transfer settings" mode on your remote control. After you've figured this out, click on the "Receive Settings FROM a Controller" button then initiate the "transfer settings" mode on your master remote control. Your modules should begin to appear thereafter. You will need to rename them individually to configure them for your HomeRemote Pro System.
Receive Primary Control Settings from a Primary Remote Control (Shifting):
To shift the Primary control settings from a Primary Remote Control to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway, initiate your Z-Wave remote control to shift its Primary control setting to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. After this has begun, quickly click on Receive Settings FROM a Controller on the HomeRemote Pro Detect Module Advanced Options menu. The Primary control settings shift should successfully transfer over to the Gateway allowing the HomeRemote Pro interface to add, remove and edit modules.
c) Shift Primary Control TO a Controller
Transfer the Primary control status of the HomeRemote Pro Gateway to Z-Wave enabled remote control, allowing the remote control to add and remove modules that may be out of reach from the HomeRemote Pro Gateway.
In custom installations, the HomeRemote Pro Gateway may be located too far from specific modules that have to be installed into walls (such as light switches, power outlets and thermostats). In cases like these using a remote control to add the devices at their installation location is necessary. To do this you will need to shift the Primary control settings from your Gateway to your Z-Wave enabled remote control. Initiate your Z-Wave enabled remote control to recieve Primary settings from the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. When this is done, click Shift Primary Control TO a Controller. The HomeRemote Pro Gateway should successfully shift the Primary function to your Z-Wave enabled remote control.
After the settings have shifted, you may add and remove modules with the remote control. When all modules have been added, you will need to shift the Primary function BACK to the HomeRemote Pro Gateway by following the instructions for Receiving settings FROM a Controller.

Cell Link phone and Pro-Level Account Requirements
Cell Link is supported by most Internet enabled phones on the market. Its unique software based implementation makes it compatible with most brands and carriers. However, to use Cell Link there are still a few requirements that need to be met for your cell phone to work correctly:
- Internet data plan or able to access the Internet via 2G or 3G (Preferred for live video)
- Java based phone, Windows Mobile (may require that you update your phone to Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0) or Blackberry device
Cell Link is currently not supported by BREW based phones from Verizon. (Smart phones only for Verizon Wireless networks)
Using Cell Link on your mobile phone also requires that you have Pro-Level Service with your HomeRemote Pro System. If you do not have a Pro-Level account, you will not be able to view video or control anything from your mobile phone.
9.7.3 – Navigating Menus and Executing commands with your Cell Phone
Selecting Functions Using Your Phone Controls
There are generally three methods of controlling the functions of Cell-Link:
1) Most modern cellular phones have navigation keys (up, down, left, right) as well
as an ‘OK’ or select button. These navigation keys can be used to highlight and
select icons within Cell-Link application.
2) Another method of selecting icons and executing functions within the Cell-Link
application is to utilize the alphanumeric keypad (number buttons) on your cell
phone. (2 – Up, 4 – Left, 6 – Right, 8 – Down)
3) Lastly, you can activate “Short Cut Keys” within Cell-Link by selecting the
“Enable Shortcuts” option from the Cell-Link main menu. These shortcuts are
assigned to the most commonly used functions within Cell-Link, and instructions
are displayed on your phone when you activate this feature.

Once you locate the Cell Link application on your cell phone press ‘Select’ to run the program.
During the initial boot up, Cell Link will establish a connection with your HomeRemote Pro Server to retrieve any changes in your home layout.
When the application loads you will see your Room layout on the left navigation bar. Use your keypad to scroll up and down through your Rooms, Scenes and Cameras. As you go over each Room with your cell phone the list of devices in each Room will appear on the right.
To select these devices simply push the right arrow key on your cell phone to navigate through your devices.
When scrolling through your devices, push the Select button on your phone to access the specific device. This will load the screen to adjust the setting on your device.

For example, the “Big Lamp” in the phone above can be adjusted using the up and down arrow pads to change the light dim level from OFF to 50% to ON. When the setting has been set, push the Select button to confirm and the Cell Link service will execute the command.
9.7.4 – Viewing Cameras on your Cell Phone
If you have a HomeRemote Pro Video Camera setup on your system you will be able to view live video from your cell phone. Navigate using your arrow keys to find the Cameras selection or locate your camera under the Room you have it installed in. Use the arrow keys on your phone to go to the devices menu (by pushing right) and select the camera you wish to view.

The Cell Link application will create a secure connection to your camera and begin feeding live video from your camera. You can view this screen full sized by selecting the ‘Large’ button on the bottom right using your cell phone buttons.
Note: Video quality and speed will vary depending on your cellular carrier broadband technology offering, cell phone model, geographical location and cellular data
plan. It is recommended you use a 3G phone with broadband Internet access for the best quality video on your cell phone. You may also choose to adjust the video settings from your HomeRemote Pro Camera to match the broadband connection of your home. For example, if you have a low bandwidth Internet connection to your home, you may want to lower the video quality and frame rate of your camera to achieve a faster video stream (View the HomeRemote Pro Camera manual for more information).
9.7.5 – Tips for using Cell Link
The Cell Link service is capable of controlling virtually any device installed on your HomeRemote Pro System. Navigation of each is the same as turning on and off a light in a Room.

In the Thermostat menu, current status is shown. To change mode, select Current Mode with the OK key, then choose the new mode by highlighting and using the OK button. To adjust the set point, select Current Set Point. Adjust the temperature by using the up and
down navigational keys, and set using the OK key. Select Fan to adjust the fan setting to either Auto or On by using the up and down navigational keys, and set using the OK key.

Window Shade operation is similar to turning lights on and off. Use the up and down arrows to select a height that you wish the window shade to be set to and click ‘Select’ when the desired height is reached.
The Cell Link Main Menu contains functions that you can use to customize the setup of your phone. Items such as a Personal Identification Number (PIN) or activation of short cut codes can be turned on or off to fit your needs. Depending on the model of your phone, these menu options may appear in a different order than listed below, but they will function as described.

9.7.13 – Cell Link Customer Support
Network Outages: Cellular networks occasionally experience periods of ‘service outage’ or abnormally high amounts of traffic that hinders the ability to send data over periods of time. Because your Cell Link system utilizes these cellular networks, in rare occasions it may not be able to send commands to your HomeRemote Pro system due to busy network traffic or cellular network outages. The Cell Link system is designed to minimize these instances, and will ‘try’ three times to send your command if for any reason it cannot contact your HomeRemote Pro system. In the case of three consecutive failed attempts to contact your HomeRemote Pro system, the Cell Link system will notify you that your command was unsuccessful. There will be a delay in the response from when you push the Select button and when the response is received as the service attempts to connect to your HomeRemote Pro System.
9.8 – View Homes (Multiple Home Management)
The View Homes page is the first page you see after logging into the HomeRemote Pro website. This page gives you information regarding all homes currently installed to your account. You can have multiple homes associated to a single account. From here you can enter the interface for any of your homes by selecting "Access Home" for your specific home or you can completely remove a home by selecting "Remove this Home." Be careful when doing this as you will need to add the home again if you wish to access it with your current account. Removing a home can be used for technical support or for reinstalling a HomeRemote Pro Gateway.
If you wish to add an additional home to your account you can click the "Add a New Home" link on the bottom and follow the steps to add a new HomeRemote Pro Gateway to your system in the case that you have multiple homes. Click the link to enter the Software Updates menu. The Software Update menu shows you your current firmware version. To check for new firmware, simply click the Check for Upgrades button. If a new software update is detected click "Upgrade Software" to initiate the update. Note: the upgrade may take several minutes. DO NOT unplug the power, network cable or leave the webpage during this time. Doing so may damage the Gateway and cause it to stop working. When the update is completed the page will inform you that it has successfully completed.

9.9.6 – Module Management
The Module Management page allows you to add new modules or sensors to your existing system, edit the names, room locations, graphical icons of your existing modules and sensors and delete or remove modules or sensors from your existing system. The Module Management page also allows you to Check Connections within your system to ensure a proper wireless connection is established between all of your devices. If a device has failed or its batteries have depleted, the Check Connections tool is useful in determining which module or sensor has failed allowing you to fix the problem and continue using your system.
9.9.6.1 – Add Modules to your Existing System:
To add a module or sensor to your existing HomeRemote Pro system follow the steps outlined on the page just as you did using the Setup Wizard.
a) Power on your module by plugging it into a wall outlet (lamp modules, appliance modules, etc.) or placing batteries into them (door sensors and motion detectors).
b) Make sure the modules are placed within five feet of the HomeRemote Pro Gateway. Some modules support long range inclusions, however not all do. If your module supports long range detection/inclusion then the Gateway can detect your module further than five feet away.
c) Click the Detect Module button once your module has been powered and placed within five feet of the Gateway. The wizard will begin the detection process by displaying a progress wheel with a status update.
d) Quickly, press the "Program" on your module or sensor (normally located on the bottom of sensors and on the side/top of lamp and appliance modules) The wizard should detect your module at this point and present the module detail input page. If the module is not detected, press the "Program" button again. (If the Gateway does not detect your module, the "Program" button may need to pressed several times to register. If the Gateway's module detection times out, click Detect Modules to activate it again, then quickly press the "Program" button on your module.
e) Once the module has been detected you will be asked to enter information regarding your specific module. Give your new module a specific name (i.e. Front Door Lights), select a room (i.e. Front door) and then select a graphical icon to represent your module. Click Add when you have completed this step.
f) Repeat these steps until you have added all your modules and sensors to the HomeRemote Pro system
9.9.6.2 – Removing Modules from your Existing System:
In the case that your module has failed or you no long wish to use the module or sensor you may remove it from your system. The HomeRemote Pro gives you three options for this:
Remove a Single Module: To remove a single module from your system, you will need to uninstall the module or sensor from its current location, andthen power it on within 5 feet of the Gateway. Once the module is within 5 feet from your Gateway, click the "Remove Device" button on the Module Management page, and then quickly press the "Program" button on your module.
Remove All Devices from your System: In some cases a complete reset of your Z-Wave network (Network of all modules and sensors) may be necessary to clear your network of all devices. Click the "Remove All Devices" button. After all modules and devices have been removed from your system, you will need to delete them individually using the "Program" button on the module and the the Remove module button on your web interface (in the Add/Remove Module page).
9.9.6.3 – Check Connections:
Checking your module and sensor communication network is a very important process in keeping your HomeRemote Pro system functioning smoothly. Whenever a module is not responding or a sensor is not relaying information to your HomeRemote Pro account, you should always attempt to Check Connections first to diagnose the problem. The Check Connections feature will perform a scan on your entire home network and attempt to talk to each module in your system. Check Connections will provide a report of the health of each module or sensor within your system by displaying a green or red icon next to each module or sensor. If green, the system is communicating with that specific module and no changes are necessary. If red, the HomeRemote Pro system is having problems communicating with the module and something must be done to fix the issue.
There are several issues that may cause a module or sensor to not respond. The module may be out of wireless range or the batteries of the sensor may be low. Try moving the module closer to another module with repeating capabilities (lamp or appliance module) or replacing the batteries in the sensor.
Once you have determined what the issue is and provided a fix, click Check Connections again to see if the problem has been solved. If the icon remains red the module may be not functioning correctly. Call Hawking tech support to report the situation at 888-202-3344.
The Check Connections feature needs to be used each time a module is added to your system or each time you move a module from one location to another.

9.9.7 – Notification Setup
Notification Accounts are used to determine where the Alerts and Notifications are sent to. For example, when you configure an Alert you will choose the Notification Accounts that will receive those alerts. To add a new Notification Account simply type the name of the account such as, Bob’s Cell Phone and enter the Email address and/or cell phone number (when entering a cell phone number you will need to select the cell phone carrier as well) When entering in a cell phone number do not use a 1 before the number or any dashes. Simply type the 10 digit phone number. When entering in an E-mail address, type the full E-mail address. If both email address and cell phone number are entered, the notification or alert will be sent to both the email address and phone number on file. Click Add when you are done with the first account and then repeat these steps to add more accounts. You will now be able to select these accounts in the Alerts and Notifications menu as valid notification accounts.
